What Is The Secret To Health, Wellness And Weight Loss?
Have you ever run into a friend that you haven’t seen in a while and noticed that he/she looks really fit and healthy? Clearly your friend has been doing something different. Immediately you wonder, what is it? Is there something he/she is doing that I'm NOT doing?
Often we are looking for the magic formula when it comes to health, wellness, and weight loss. The secret that is going to help us finally achieve our goals - whatever those goals may be. Some of us are looking to lose a good bit of weight. Others of us are looking to drop those few pounds that we just can't seem to shed. And some of us want to live healthier and feel better.
But what if I told you that you ALREADY have the secret regardless of your overarching health goal? And it's not the latest fad diet. Nor is it the latest fitness craze. And it certainly is not a gimmick or the next health bandwagon.
This magic formula I speak of is actually quite different. It takes a holistic and integrative approach to wellness. And it comes in the form of understanding your own unique body.
Why Understanding Your Food Cravings Is The Best Way To Lose Weight And Live Healthier
Food cravings. Weight loss. Healthy living. The first set of words seem like they should contradict the last two. But it turns out that they are all closely intertwined and more similar than they are different.
Often we think of food cravings as something that should be controlled, willed away, or ignored. And maybe that even represent some sort of shortcoming on our part - like that we lack self-discipline or self-control. However, food cravings are a really good thing to have. And once you understand them, they can become one of your best allies when it comes to healthy and sustainable weight loss and making the lifestyle changes that will improve your overall health.
You see, your body wants you to be healthy and achieve your ideal weight. Your body wants you to feel vibrant and alive. And your body communicates with you on a regular basis in an effort to help you accomplish this.
And guess how your body communicates with you? You guessed it. Through your food cravings! If you think that sounds a little far-fetched, don't abandon ship just yet. Stay with me.
It is important to understand that the body is constantly seeking balance and equilibrium. Whenever something is out of balance, the body will crave whatever it needs in order to regain balance and establish equilibrium. The information to let you know what might be out of balance for you lies beneath your food cravings.
And let's talk about what happens when you regain balance. Your food cravings disappear. And can you imagine what happens when your food cravings disappear?! You don’t wind up accidentally sabotaging your best efforts to eat well and lose weight. Plus when you start giving your body what it needs on a consistent and regular basis, you feel satisfied and nourished on a consistent and regular basis.

Food Cravings As Clues
But before you can use these suckers to your advantage, you have to be willing to shift your thinking around your food cravings. Instead of something to despise, berate, or even control, think of your food cravings as clues. Clues that contain very valuable information about what your body needs in any given moment.
I like to think of my food cravings as little notes to myself. As ways my body is saying “Hey you, the one who can’t stop thinking about your kid's leftover Halloween candy!! Listen up!! I need something over here!!”
Your food cravings are simply messages to let you know that something is out of balance. And once you take the time to understand what your body is trying to tell you, you can take corrective action and be well on your way to achieving your weight loss and health goals.
It comes down to trusting your body and listening to its messages. And read on, my friend, because I am going to show you exactly how to do that!
How To Demystify Your Food Cravings And Use Them To Achieve Your Weight Loss And Health Goals
Step #1: Become Aware Of Common Sources Of Food Cravings
Here is a list of 10 common sources of food cravings that I have seen at work with myself and my clients.

Step #2: Understand The Root Cause Of Each Food Craving
Your body is a miraculous machine and - I promise you - it will never lead you astray!
Take the time to learn what is going on within your body that creates the craving so that you can appreciate what your body is trying to tell you. Remember, the body is constantly seeking balance and equilibrium. Whenever something is out of balance, the body will crave whatever it needs in order to regain balance and establish equilibrium. The information to let you know what might be out of balance for you lies beneath your food cravings.
So let's take needing nutrients as an example. If you have recurring cravings, it may be your body's way of communicating with you that you need certain nutrients. For instance, you might crave chocolate because you are deficient in magnesium. This is because the cacao content in chocolate contains magnesium. Your body may be creating a chocolate craving as a message to let you know that you did not adequately fuel it and that you need to restore your magnesium levels.

Step #3: Take Corrective Action
Once you understand the root cause of your food craving and what is creating an imbalance within your body, you can take corrective action. You can take steps to restore balance and cause the craving to disappear. Plus you can start being proactive so that you don't put yourself in a position to experience the craving in the first place. It's called setting yourself up for success. And common sense would tell us that when you don't have a food craving, you don't have to rely on willpower or self-control to overcome it.
So back to the chocolate example...
If you are deficient in magnesium, you can add in foods to your diet that are rich in magnesium to help you restore your magnesium levels. A few high magnesium foods that you could focus on incorporating into your diet are dark leafy greens, nuts and seeds (specifically pumpkin and squash seeds), fish, and avocados. I mean, seriously, how cool is that?! Nature is so incredibly fascinating.
